Xeomin is a prescription medication that is made from botulinum type A bacteria that create botulism, which blocks nerve activity in the muscles and causes a temporary reduction in muscle activity. Once injected, Xeomin creates a softer glow on the face, diminishing facial furrows and wrinkles. It can also be used to treat eye muscle conditions caused by nerve disorders, such as uncontrolled blinking and spasms. A distinct difference between Xeomin and BOTOX is that Xeomin does not have any additives, therefore patients may be less likely to develop a resistance to it. During the initial consultation, Pittsburgh Xeomin specialist, Dr. James Fernau, will discuss the differences between the various muscle relaxers and what to expect based on his initial analysis.

Many thanks to Cindy (Aesthetician) who was great! She was conscientious and made me feel comfortable during all the treatments. Dr. Fernau and his entire staff were so friendly and made me feel welcome in the office. "Had a severely deviated septum from past injuries. Dr. Fernau fixed me up and my breathing is now great. His staff is fantastic, from Sheila to Josh - I felt valued and informed throughout the process, pre through post op."- D.W. / Google / Feb 27, 2020
"Thank you fellow reviewers!!! You are so right!!!! Based on your reviews, I chose Dr. Fernau for my injectable adventure. I was terrified because years ago I had a bad experience but from the initial contact with Josh I knew this was the right choice. Have you ever had fun making an appointment? Well Josh is super! His easy going manner, super personality and patience answering questions was beyond what would normally be expected. Upon arrival at the office, he made you feel welcomed like a friend, rather than one of many consumers. And that feeling continued as Amber, Dr. Fernau's Medical Assistant ushered me back to the office where she too exhibited patience and caring with all my questions and concerns. She also is a joy! When I met Dr. Fernau, he was thorough, patient, confident, caring and made my fears disappear. He answered all my questions without fatigue and I felt instantly comfortable. I can't explain the confidence I had in him after I met with him, and as it turned out, that confidence was well deserved. What I love about Dr. Fernau is that my injection outcome seemed as important to him as a major plastic surgery event. I am very pleased with the results and appreciate the time Dr.Fernau gave me over a few weeks to make sure everything turned out perfect! During the course of those visits I met with Sheila, who also is proficient in injectables. She is so pleasant and was also very concerned with a good outcome. I also met Cindy the Aesthetician, who was so gracious, speaking with me regarding other possible procedures down the line. Really, I couldn't be happier!!! Thank you Dr. Fernau for your excellence and your total office experience. I will be back. See you soon!"- C.M. / Google / Feb 25, 2020
What to Expect
Xeomin is an in-office procedure that is usually performed in less than 30 minutes. Prior to treatment, ink marks will be made to the injection sites on the face, and a fine needle will deliver the product directly into the skin. Xeomin is most effective in treating frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead furrows, and wrinkles around the chin area. There is no pain during the injection, but numbing creams may be applied to ease any discomfort caused by the injection prick. Mild swelling and redness may appear on the injection area, which usually subsides after a few hours. After a Xeomin treatment, there is no downtime, and most patients may resume normal activities.
The average cost for a single syringe of Xeomin ranges from $250 to $850. This cost is similar to both BOTOX and Dysport as well. Some patients will only require a single syringe of product, while others will need several in order to attain the results they desire. Additional treatments will be needed about once a quarter in order to maintain results.

Is BOTOX Better?
Xeomin is purely botulinum toxin type A unlike BOTOX (or Dysport), which has additives. This decreases the chances of the patient’s immunity to the medication. There is also the ease of distribution as Xeomin doesn’t require refrigeration. Other than that, both provide the same effect in treating facial cosmetic issues.
Is This Safe?
In the hands of a well-experienced practitioner, muscle relaxants are safe. The effects are also temporary, so if the patient is dissatisfied with the results, they can be rest assured that these results will not last forever. Xeomin has been proven by the FDA to be safe and effective to use.
Combined With Fillers?
A growing trend nowadays is a “liquid facelift” in which both muscle relaxers and derma fillers are combined in a single treatment. It is a noninvasive way of rejuvenating the facial appearance without surgery. Most patients who prefer this method believe the temporary and safe results outweigh the risks of a surgical procedure.
