Xeomin is a prescription medication that is made from botulinum type A bacteria that create botulism, which blocks nerve activity in the muscles and causes a temporary reduction in muscle activity. Once injected, Xeomin creates a softer glow on the face, diminishing facial furrows and wrinkles. It can also be used to treat eye muscle conditions caused by nerve disorders, such as uncontrolled blinking and spasms. A distinct difference between Xeomin and BOTOX is that Xeomin does not have any additives, therefore patients may be less likely to develop a resistance to it. During the initial consultation, Pittsburgh Xeomin specialist, Dr. James Fernau, will discuss the differences between the various muscle relaxers and what to expect based on his initial analysis.
"Dr. Fernau, Sherry, and the entire staff are spectacular. I went for the NeoGraft procedure and could not happier. The procedure itself was like walking into a spa, recovery was a breeze, and I am already thrilled with the results. Sherry is an artist at what she does and the best you’ll find in the area. Furthermore, Dr. Fernau and his staff make your safety and care a top priority. I highly recommend this team."- K.D. / Google / Sep 13, 2023

"I called Dr Fernau’s office for an emergency implant replacement after an unfortunate mammogram incident . My prior Dr from 21 years ago retired and Dr Fernau’s office immediately scheduled me right in. By the following Monday I was scheduled for surgery and could not be happier with the results. They replaced both implants and a fat transfer which now allows me to zip up those old jeans. An extra bonus! The nurses and staff are wonderful and they make you feel comfortable. Dr Fernau is an artist in his field. I highly recommend and cannot thank them all enough!"- H.C. / Google / Sep 12, 2023

"Dr. Fernau and his team achieve incredible results, while epitomizing the highest standard of patient care. I had a liquid rhinoplasty done here and my expectations were exceeded to such an extent, that I am nothing short of astonished by the result he and his team created. Dr. Fernau is an artist who will not settle for anything less than the best for his patients. A wonderful person in addition to a skilled doctor, his genuine nature shined through every interaction we had. The contours and shaping he created as a result of my procedure were perfect from every angle, and on top of it, I impressively experienced no noticeable bruising or swelling afterwards thanks to his adept technique and methods. Having had this same procedure done years ago elsewhere (thus having ability to compare doctors), I give my highest recommendation to Dr. Fernau for anyone looking to have a procedure of this nature done. Alongside of Dr. Fernau is a consummate team of professionals who exhibit the same high level of skill and care that he demonstrates. Sherry, Cindy, and Amber are all incredibly approachable, easy to talk to, and ask questions of. They go above and beyond to make your experience and procedure/visit smooth and comfortable, all while concurrently running an efficient operation. I admire their teamwork, knowledge, and efficiency. What sets this office apart are a) the level of artistry and expertise you receive and b) the genuine human touch that comes with it. You are not a number here; you are a patient who the entire team demonstrates true care and compassion for from intake to your final result. You will be glad you chose them. I will undoubtably be coming back for other needs in the future."- W.E. / Google / Sep 07, 2023
What to Expect
Xeomin is an in-office procedure that is usually performed in less than 30 minutes. Prior to treatment, ink marks will be made to the injection sites on the face, and a fine needle will deliver the product directly into the skin. Xeomin is most effective in treating frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead furrows, and wrinkles around the chin area. There is no pain during the injection, but numbing creams may be applied to ease any discomfort caused by the injection prick. Mild swelling and redness may appear on the injection area, which usually subsides after a few hours. After a Xeomin treatment, there is no downtime, and most patients may resume normal activities.
The average cost for a single syringe of Xeomin ranges from $250 to $850. This cost is similar to both BOTOX and Dysport as well. Some patients will only require a single syringe of product, while others will need several in order to attain the results they desire. Additional treatments will be needed about once a quarter in order to maintain results.

Is BOTOX Better?
Xeomin is purely botulinum toxin type A unlike BOTOX (or Dysport), which has additives. This decreases the chances of the patient’s immunity to the medication. There is also the ease of distribution as Xeomin doesn’t require refrigeration. Other than that, both provide the same effect in treating facial cosmetic issues.
Is This Safe?
In the hands of a well-experienced practitioner, muscle relaxants are safe. The effects are also temporary, so if the patient is dissatisfied with the results, they can be rest assured that these results will not last forever. Xeomin has been proven by the FDA to be safe and effective to use.
Combined With Fillers?
A growing trend nowadays is a “liquid facelift” in which both muscle relaxers and derma fillers are combined in a single treatment. It is a noninvasive way of rejuvenating the facial appearance without surgery. Most patients who prefer this method believe the temporary and safe results outweigh the risks of a surgical procedure.
