Xeomin is a prescription medication that is made from botulinum type A bacteria that create botulism, which blocks nerve activity in the muscles and causes a temporary reduction in muscle activity. Once injected, Xeomin creates a softer glow on the face, diminishing facial furrows and wrinkles. It can also be used to treat eye muscle conditions caused by nerve disorders, such as uncontrolled blinking and spasms. A distinct difference between Xeomin and BOTOX is that Xeomin does not have any additives, therefore patients may be less likely to develop a resistance to it. During the initial consultation, Pittsburgh Xeomin specialist, Dr. James Fernau, will discuss the differences between the various muscle relaxers and what to expect based on his initial analysis.
"If you want to be treated like family and get world class treatment at a very very reasonable cost this is the place to be. Thanks a lot doctor, and you wonderful staff. The best experience I have had at any doctor's office."- P.G. / Facebook / Sep 02, 2015
"I just finished day seven of my post-surgery checkup with Dr Fernau, and here’s my personal experience. Upon arrival of my consultation, I was greeted by the friendliest staff. Every one of them helped in my progression, aided in my treatments, calmed my anxiety, and exceeded my expectations. Scheduling surgery and getting the medications for the operation were straightforward. As for the surgery, the instructions were clear, the procedure explained, and questions answered. The results were beyond what I expected. Dr Fernau is exceptionally passionate about his work and cares for his patients. The open communication that Dr Fernau has with his staff is what creates such a successful business model and positive outcomes for his patients. After surgery I had difficulty walking, and one of the staff members helped my wife with taking me home. The compassion, dedication, and excellence that I experienced with Dr Fernau and his staff give me the pleasure of providing the highest of recommendations."- C.M. / Google / Nov 24, 2019

What to Expect
Xeomin is an in-office procedure that is usually performed in less than 30 minutes. Prior to treatment, ink marks will be made to the injection sites on the face, and a fine needle will deliver the product directly into the skin. Xeomin is most effective in treating frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead furrows, and wrinkles around the chin area. There is no pain during the injection, but numbing creams may be applied to ease any discomfort caused by the injection prick. Mild swelling and redness may appear on the injection area, which usually subsides after a few hours. After a Xeomin treatment, there is no downtime, and most patients may resume normal activities.
The average cost for a single syringe of Xeomin ranges from $250 to $850. This cost is similar to both BOTOX and Dysport as well. Some patients will only require a single syringe of product, while others will need several in order to attain the results they desire. Additional treatments will be needed about once a quarter in order to maintain results.

Is BOTOX Better?
Xeomin is purely botulinum toxin type A unlike BOTOX (or Dysport), which has additives. This decreases the chances of the patient’s immunity to the medication. There is also the ease of distribution as Xeomin doesn’t require refrigeration. Other than that, both provide the same effect in treating facial cosmetic issues.
Is This Safe?
In the hands of a well-experienced practitioner, muscle relaxants are safe. The effects are also temporary, so if the patient is dissatisfied with the results, they can be rest assured that these results will not last forever. Xeomin has been proven by the FDA to be safe and effective to use.
Combined With Fillers?
A growing trend nowadays is a “liquid facelift” in which both muscle relaxers and derma fillers are combined in a single treatment. It is a noninvasive way of rejuvenating the facial appearance without surgery. Most patients who prefer this method believe the temporary and safe results outweigh the risks of a surgical procedure.
