Microdermabrasion is a facial rejuvenation treatment that uses microcrystals to remove the top layers of skin to reveal fresh skin and initiate new skin growth. Accent on Body Aesthetic Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa's skin rejuvenation equipment treats the skin by removing the dull, lifeless, sun-damaged epidermis and stimulating the production of new skin cells and collagen. This procedure offers a similar result to a chemical peel, however, the process is different. The tip of the microdermabrasion wand safely removes the top, damaged layers of skin. This allows the skin to go through a natural peeling process. The technique promotes new skin growth that is softer, brighter and free from any irregularities. The Pittsburgh plastic surgery office of board-certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. James Fernau offers microdermabrasion treatment to help resolve skin irregularities such as fine wrinkles, small acne scars, age spots, and blemishes.
"After living many hard man-years, my face was left showing large cratering pores and deep scars. I had spend many dollars on info-mercial products and over-the-counter creams, but none of them seemed to work. I decided to “go for it” and seek microderm-abrasion. Three treatments later I feel like a new man. My skin has never flourished with such stunning brilliance. I often find myself staring into the mirror now adoring the brilliant complexion I never had. Cindy’s warm hands and charming personality make the experience almost supernatural. I can walk into any rave now feeling confident and ready to dance. In fact, I’ve actually noticed that my stamina has increased. I used to tire early in the night due to my low self-esteem because of my complexion. That has all changed now! I am even okay with wearing open-toed shoes, something I never thought I would do. Thanks guys for making my inner me come back to life!"- J. / Office Visit / May 27, 2015
"40 Year Old First Timer with Microdermabrasion/veinwave - Pittsburgh, PA - Cindy Scozio has been very friendly each and every time I go. She has given me some helpful hints for taking care of my skin and I can't recommend her enough!"- J. / RealSelf / Apr 28, 2015
"I have had multiple treatments, including microdermabrasion and facials, all performed by licensed aesthetician and certified laser technician, Cindy Scozio. When somebody decides to spend the money and put one’s trust in the hands of a person who will hopefully make an improvement in one’s appearance, and thus in one’s self confidence, the best thing to hear is that the practitioner, herself, has undergone these same procedures. I felt immediately comfortable when I first met Cindy at Dr. Fernau’s office. She is eager to answer any and all questions, and give details of her personal experience with the procedures. She never promised what she could not deliver (perfection where there were acne scars) but did promise significant improvement, which did actually result! She is skilled and knowledgeable, friendly and professional. I am never pressured to purchase more than I want, but I am provided with information about up-coming specials and packages routinely offered by the office. This has allowed me to keep my skin looking better than ever, and to keep people thinking I’m at least 10 years younger than my actual age! There is no substitute for experience in the field of aesthetic procedures. I would highly recommend Cindy Scozio’s skillful eye, professional judgment, and steady hand to anybody seeking better skin care. Thanks, Cindy!"- C. / Office Visit / May 27, 2015
"I was referred to Dr. Fernau by another plastic surgeon in 2009 to reduce the appearance of acne scars and a chickenpox scar. Since then I have had three procedures performed by Dr. Fernau, including the CO2 laser, and the results have been incredible. I actually have my first fraxel laser treatment today with Cindy Scozio, the Aesthetician at Dr. Fernau’s office. She is extremely talented and very personable. I highly recommend her microdermabrasion. After just two microderms from Cindy and using the Acne Kit by Dr. Fernau my skin is finally acne free."- K.S. / Office Visit / May 28, 2015
"As a life long acne sufferer I felt that there was no solution but to wait and see what happens with my skin. After finding Dr. Fernau’s office and his licensed aesthetician CindyScozio I know that that is no longer the case. I have gone through one Isolaz treatment, 3 microdermabrasions, and the use of Dr. Fernau’s acne kit and Cindy has transformed my skin. My face and back are both almost completely clear, and I am no longer embarrassed to go out in public without makeup. Cindy is kind and knowledgeable and she always has the best interest of her patients in mind. She is not out to sell treatments, she honestly cares about everyone seeing results. With an extremely kind and professional staff, I know I will continue to be a client at Dr. Fernau’s office."- T.P. / Office Visit / May 28, 2015
Microdermabrasion Procedure Technique
The microdermabrasion treatment will be performed after the skin is cleansed of makeup and dirt. The microdermabrasion wand will be passed over the skin, pushing out a stream of aluminum oxide crystals that exfoliate the skin. The crystals and dead skin will then be suctioned away by the wand. The skin is then cleansed of any remaining debris before moisturizer is added to hydrate and protect. Most patients will have pinkish skin after their treatment, but it can typically be covered up with makeup.
Microdermabrasion During/After the Procedure
Patients may feel mild discomfort during their microdermabrasion treatment as the skin is exfoliated and suctioned, but they should not need a numbing cream or local anesthesia during this short procedure. Patients may choose to have their face, neck, and/or chest treated with microdermabrasion. After the treatment, the skin will be sensitive to the sun, so it is important to wear a minimum SPF 15 on the treated areas for at least the first several weeks for protection. Patients will see an improvement in the tone and texture of their skin after one treatment, but for best results, patients should schedule microdermabrasion treatments every 2 - 3 weeks.
Microdermabrasion Expected Cost
Microdermabrasion is $400 for five sessions. This allows patients enough sessions to see optimal results.

Can it Improve Acne Scars?
Long after acne breakouts have stopped, many people still have minor acne scarring on their skin that can be improved with microdermabrasion treatments. Patients with active acne can also benefit from microdermabrasion to help remove dirt and oil from the pores while safely exfoliating the skin. For deeper scars or keloids, patients should consider a chemical peel or laser skin treatment.
Who is Not a Good Candidate?
While microdermabrasion can be used on all skin tones and types, it is not recommended for patients who have an active skin condition (herpes, warts, active acne, or auto-immune disorder). Microdermabrasion treatments are also not recommenced for women who are pregnant. For at least 2 - 3 weeks before a microdermabrasion treatment, patients should not have a professional skin treatment (chemical peel, dermal injections, waxing, or tanning).
Risks and Benefits
Microdermabrasion is a safe, non-invasive skin treatment that has few risks and no recovery time. Patients may have pink skin for a few hours after their treatment, but as long as sun protection is used, patients can avoid the increased risk of sunburn and skin sensitivity.
How Long Will a Session Last?
A microdermabrasion treatment of the face lasts around 30 - 60 minutes. Patients should have visible improvements after one treatment, but optimal results will be seen after several sessions, spaced 2 - 3 weeks apart.
