Overview

Microdermabrasion is a facial rejuvenation treatment that uses microcrystals to remove the top layers of skin to reveal fresh skin and initiate new skin growth. Accent on Body Aesthetic Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa's skin rejuvenation equipment treats the skin by removing the dull, lifeless, sun-damaged epidermis and stimulating the production of new skin cells and collagen. This procedure offers a similar result to a chemical peel, however, the process is different. The tip of the microdermabrasion wand safely removes the top, damaged layers of skin. This allows the skin to go through a natural peeling process. The technique promotes new skin growth that is softer, brighter and free from any irregularities. The Pittsburgh plastic surgery office of board-certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. James Fernau offers microdermabrasion treatment to help resolve skin irregularities such as fine wrinkles, small acne scars, age spots, and blemishes.

Procedure Technique

The microdermabrasion treatment will be performed after the skin is cleansed of makeup and dirt. The microdermabrasion wand will be passed over the skin, pushing out a stream of aluminum oxide crystals that exfoliate the skin. The crystals and dead skin will then be suctioned away by the wand. The skin is then cleansed of any remaining debris before moisturizer is added to hydrate and protect. Most patients will have pinkish skin after their treatment, but it can typically be covered up with makeup.

During/After the Procedure

Patients may feel mild discomfort during their microdermabrasion treatment as the skin is exfoliated and suctioned, but they should not need a numbing cream or local anesthesia during this short procedure. Patients may choose to have their face, neck, and/or chest treated with microdermabrasion. After the treatment, the skin will be sensitive to the sun, so it is important to wear a minimum SPF 15 on the treated areas for at least the first several weeks for protection. Patients will see an improvement in the tone and texture of their skin after one treatment, but for best results, patients should schedule microdermabrasion treatments every 2 - 3 weeks.

Expected Cost

Microdermabrasion is $400 for five sessions. This allows patients enough sessions to see optimal results.

Microdermabrasion FAQs

Ideal Candidate?

Microdermabrasion treatments can be used on all skin types to correct fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, environmental damage, uneven skin tone, clogged pores, minor scarring, and a rough skin texture.

Can it Improve Acne Scars?

Long after acne breakouts have stopped, many people still have minor acne scarring on their skin that can be improved with microdermabrasion treatments. Patients with active acne can also benefit from microdermabrasion to help remove dirt and oil from the pores while safely exfoliating the skin. For deeper scars or keloids, patients should consider a chemical peel or laser skin treatment.

Who is Not a Good Candidate?

While microdermabrasion can be used on all skin tones and types, it is not recommended for patients who have an active skin condition (herpes, warts, active acne, or auto-immune disorder). Microdermabrasion treatments are also not recommenced for women who are pregnant. For at least 2 - 3 weeks before a microdermabrasion treatment, patients should not have a professional skin treatment (chemical peel, dermal injections, waxing, or tanning).

Risks and Benefits

Microdermabrasion is a safe, non-invasive skin treatment that has few risks and no recovery time. Patients may have pink skin for a few hours after their treatment, but as long as sun protection is used, patients can avoid the increased risk of sunburn and skin sensitivity.

How Long Will a Session Last?

A microdermabrasion treatment of the face lasts around 30 - 60 minutes. Patients should have visible improvements after one treatment, but optimal results will be seen after several sessions, spaced 2 - 3 weeks apart.
